HOT5 Daily 10/8/2009

1. "Top Ten Conspiracy Theories" Conspiracy theories and conspiracy theory thinking are all too popular.

Representative Sample: It's little wonder that the drug industry ("Big Pharma") is looked upon with suspicion. But some proponents of "alternative medicine" believe that drug companies actually conspire to keep people sick to reap profits.

2. "Does religion lead to small government or stonings?"  Debunking one argument regarding the utility of religion.

Representative Sample: Bradley’s article was titled “Less Religion Means More Government.” Sure, the evidence for that claim is astounding. Consider the deeply religious libertarian utopias in Saudi Arabia and Iran, for instance.

3. "The Southern Flank" Something else to worry about.

Representative Sample: For the last three years ,there has been a stream of articles, op-eds, and reports about the expansion of Iranian influence and proxies in the near abroad. These contacts include a large presence in South American Middle Eastern diasporas, official contacts with anti-American “Bolivarian” regimes, and fund-raising on US soil.

4. "Baucus bill: For $829 billion we go from 83% to 94% insured" What a deal.

Representative Sample: I have a better idea. Why don't we just find those 11% who stand to gain coverage from ObamaCare and buy them a frickin' policy with Blue Cross? I am pretty sure we could do that for under $829 billion.

5. "Value Added Tax – Not If But When" One of the many reasons to vote GOP in 2010.

Representative Sample: Earlier this week Madame Speaker told Charlie Rose that she’s open to a value added tax, and that tax increases will be necessary to pay for health care. If you think you’re taxed too much already just wait until the VAT hits everything you purchase
