Rich Lowry at
National Review Online posted an article earlier today about how Obama operates called, "
The Obama Three-Step." Here's the description:
First: Denounce your presidential predecessor for a given policy, energizing your party’s base and capitalizing on his abiding unpopularity. Second: Pretend to have reversed that policy upon taking office with a symbolic act or high-profile statement. Third: Adopt a version of that same policy, knowing that it’s the only way to govern responsibly or believing that doing otherwise is too difficult. Repeat as necessary.
That's a pretty accurate, concise analysis, and he gives some good examples. Little did Lowry know, but Obama decided to provide him with yet another example on the very day he put up the article, making a big deal about
no longer using the term "enemy combatant." As the
Washington Post notes,
Though dropping the term "enemy combatant" will have little practical effect, it is a symbolic move by the Obama administration to break with the past.
Looks like Lowry has Obama's modus operandi down cold.
Sounds like SOP for all politicians I've ever seen. Promise a "new way" in order to get elected, once elected make some changes around the margins, but other than that, continue to ride the train of government down the well worn railway tracks.

True. Obama seems to be fairly pragmatic on national security. His attempt to make symbolic changes is understandable, and may actually be useful in some ways.
